First thing’s first. Don’t dive straight into your revision without a proper plan. Planning means assigning enough time to go over different modules and subjects in as much detail as necessary.
You might think making a revision timetable is time consuming (which it can be), but it will save you time in the long run. Why? Well, you’ll already know what lies ahead when you wake up each day.
This means you can wake up early, have breakfast, then crack on with your work without scratching your head as you come up with a plan of action for the day. Trust us, planning does make perfect.
Make your revision timetable as detailed as you like and only include the information which you feel necessary to guide you through the weeks upto your exams. You’ll know what method works for you.
Break the schedule down into weeks, days, mornings, afternoons or even hour-by-hour if need be.
To get through your schedule, make sure you hop out of bed bright and early each morning.
Get as much revising done before midday when your mind is still fresh and active. Plus, with a clear timetable already written up, which outlines what you’ll be learning each morning and evening, you’ll be more motivated to get a headstart.
Aim to finish at the same time each day, just like you would when working a regular job, to give you a goal to work towards. Fit all your revision in between 9am and 5pm then enjoy the evening off to rest.
Don’t attempt to revise all day long without a break, because you’ll only wear yourself out. If you start to lose focus and find yourself procrastinating, it’s time you should take a short break.
Procrastinating is a waste of time when you have exams looming, so try to avoid it. If you find you work better in set chunks of time, try to schedule breaks every so often — perhaps for 10 minutes each hour.
Only look at social media during your breaks and resist temptation to look at apps on your phone during your revision periods. Avoiding outside distractions like your phone will improve your concentration, which in turn will enhance your ability to retain information.
Getting out of the house to exercise will help you take your mind off your schedule, but also help you to retain the information you’re trying to learn. Whether you like running, swimming or you play social sports, exercise should always be part of your daily — and exam revision — routine.
Exercising helps to release the body’s endorphins, which make us feel better and also block out negative thoughts. This is ideal when you’re revising as it will allow you to concentrate on what’s important.
It’s proven your brain remembers more when the body is active, so resist the temptation to sit there reading and writing notes all day. When you’re losing lagging and concentration, perhaps it’s time to go for a brisk walk, run or to the gym? Do what you know will refresh your mind and body.
