How to Find Student Accommodation in Dundee

Students choosing to study for their degree at the University of Dundee don’t just get a great education. That’s because the city itself is rated as one of the most student-friendly cities in Scotland and the United Kingdom.

From DUSA The Union, which holds non-stop events and activities, to the mix of bars, clubs and dining spots, students based in Dundee have plenty of options if they want a good time.

With all that studying, wedged in between lots of socialising in true Scottish style, you’ll need somewhere to rest your head at the end of the day. Looking for student accommodation in Dundee but don’t know which areas to live in? We’ve got you covered.

The Dundee student rental market

The Dundee student rental market has enough variety to meet all requirements. So whether you’re looking for a fully furnished home with a bright open plan lounge or a double bedroom is your highest priority, you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Location is important too and in Dundee, the main student area is well within walking distance of both the University of Dundee and Abertay University. Perth Road, which runs through the heart of the West End, is where you’ll likely want to be located. Below we look a little deeper into both.

West End

Students love this quirky city located on the banks of the Firth of Tay estuary in eastern Scotland.

The West End of Dundee is bordered by the River Tay to the south and is the location of the University of Dundee campus. A mainly residential neighbourhood — it’s also where the airport, botanic gardens and the best student bars in the city are found.

The city’s cultural status has grown significantly over recent years. The West End is where you’ll find the Dundee Rep Theatre, the Whitehall Theatre and the Contemporary Arts building nestled amongst smaller galleries and studios.

Is it any wonder then that around 20,000 students call the West End home during term time?

Perth Road

Perth Road starts outside the Tower Building at the University of Dundee, cuts through the West End and heads out of town until it meets the A85 which is the way to go if you’re travelling to Perth.

Dundee is nicknamed the ‘City of Discovery’ and it’s discovering you’ll want to be doing with all the cool bars, music venues and shops that line this iconic street and the city centre.

There are plenty of spots we could mention but you’ll certainly want to check out the atmospheric pub, The George Orwell. From quiet nights by the fire to gigs and live DJs, there’s plenty to keep you going back.

Art Bar is a few minutes walk from the George Orwell along Perth Road and should be your next port of call. This cosy little bar is right across the road from the Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design (DJCAD) and is where you’ll find many art students enjoying a post-lecture tipple or two.

Another spot to try is Drouthy's with its focus on Scottish brewed drinks. With over 20 draught and 50 bottled beers on offer, it’s the perfect stop off before you head back to your student accommodation.

If music’s your thing then you’ll want to drop by the dance-focused Le freak Records. Their website blurb speaks for itself: “We try not to take ourselves too seriously and have created the brightest and most inviting shop we could muster!”. Head on down to catch up and coming local bands and DJ’s - you might even watch the next big thing!

With so many students descending on the West End and Perth Road each term, you’re sure to find a bustling hive of activity and meet lots of new and interesting people and make friends for life.
