WHO CAN LIVE IN MEARS STUDENT LIFE ACCOMMODATION?
Any full-time student attending a university, college or other educational institution. You will need to have a status of full time student throughout your stay with us. We accept any undergraduate and postgraduate students. Part-time or internship students without full time student status will not be accepted.
CAN I SHARE A ROOM WITH MY PARTNER/ FRIEND?
Our rooms (en-suite/ non en-suite) are for single occupancy only and cannot be shared. However, our 1 bedroom apartments or studios can be shared with a partner/ friend.
CAN I VIEW THE ACCOMMODATION BEFORE I BOOK?
Yes, our site offices are open between 9AM to 5PM from Monday to Friday and will be happy to show you around. It is advisable to book your appointment by contacting our team via email or phone beforehand. Alternatively, you can review our website for more information on each room type and photos of the location.
HOW DO I BOOK A ROOM?
Online – go to www.mearsstudentlife.co.uk, select your preferred location. You will be given option to scroll down to review our available room types in the location of your choice. Select a room type of your choice and click ‘Book A Room’. After this just follow the instructions on your screen. It’s that easy.
On site – if you are a current resident or have visited a property and would like to (re)book, you can do so by visiting reception desk and ask for a member of staff to help you with the application. Alternatively, give us a call and an adviser will be happy to assist you further.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO WHEN BOOKING?
You will need to submit a deposit payment/booking fee of £250 in order to reserve your room by a credit or debit card (credit card surcharge may apply). Shall you select an option to pay with instalments you will also need to have your Guarantor details ready.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DEPOSIT? IS IT REFUNDABLE?
Upon check-in, your deposit will be put into a Government Approved Tenancy Deposit Scheme. It will be returned to you within 10 working days after your license/ lease end date, providing there aren’t any deductions for damages. Any deductions will be discussed with you during your check-out inspection.
WHAT IS A GUARANTOR?
A guarantor is a person who takes joint financial responsibility for your license/ lease. Shall you default on any payment under your license/ lease it is your guarantor’s responsibility to pay the outstanding payment. A guarantor will be asked to sign your license/ lease in order for the license/ lease to be accepted by Mears Student Life.
WHO CAN BE A GUARANTOR?
A person who is able to take financial responsibility for your license/ lease if you are unable to do so. A guarantor cannot be another student, resident of Mears Student Life or anyone under the age of 22. A guarantor will be required to provide Mears Student Life with their photo ID and proof of address. In some cases we will be happy to consider an international guarantor too, please contact us for more details.
WHAT IF MY UNIVERISTY/ GOVERNMENT/ OTHER INSTITUTION HAS AGREED TO ACT AS GUARANTOR?
A named person from your university, government or other institution will need to sign your license/lease and so accept the terms and conditions of their responsibility. They will be able to use the university or named organisation address.
WHO NEEDS A GUARANTOR?
If you are looking to pay us via instalments, you will need a UK Guarantor. If you select the option to pay us in full, no Guarantor will be required plus you will be offered a discount of 2% on your full rent.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CHANGE MY MIND AFTER BOOKING MY ROOM OR DON'T GET THE GRADES/VISA FOR MY CHOSEN UNIVERSITY?
That depends on your circumstances, but if you do not get a place at the University of your choice or did not manage to obtain a student visa and let us know in time (as per terms and conditions of the license/ lease) we will refund your deposit in full.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY BOOKING IS COMPLETE?
Once your application is fully completed we will send you an email confirming the license/ lease. The steps to finish your application will be shared with you once you receive an offer of accommodation from us.
I HAVE A DISABILITY, DO YOU ACCEPT DISABLED STUDENTS?
Yes, we do and would love to have you stay with us, however, not all of our locations have disabled-ready rooms so we advise to check with us before making a booking to discuss your requirements.
WHAT CONTRACT LENGTHS DO YOU OFFER? CAN I MOVE OUT BEFORE MY LICENSE EXPIRES?
We offer a range of contract lengths between 42 and 51 week term depending on location. You can move out anytime but you will be responsible for any outstanding rent due on your license/ lease unless you are able to find like-for-like replacement to take over the remainder of your license/ lease.
WHEN CAN I MOVE-IN? CAN I MOVE-IN EARLY?
Move-in dates vary from one location to another but they are all available to view before you submit your booking on our website or here:
Move-in dates for 2018-2019 season:
Old Mill, Dundee – 1st September 2018
Bramall Court, Salford – 8th September 2018
Crescent Point, Plymouth – 15th September 2018
Please note: You can only move in on the day your license/ lease starts or any day thereafter but not before.
WHEN I COMPLETE MY ACCOMMODATION LICENSE/ LEASE, WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO UPLOAD/ SEND WITH MY APPLICATION?
If you are paying the rent fully in advance you need to upload the following documents;
1 x passport photo, a photocopy of your passport, a recent utility bill/bank statement or letter from your university dated within the last 3 months as proof of your address – with your name on it.
If you are paying the rent in instalments, then you are required to provide the same information as above plus a copy of your guarantor’s proof of address in the UK, which must be in the form of either a utilities bill or bank statement and a copy of your guarantors photo ID.
WHEN IS MY FIRST RENT PAYMENT DUE?
Your first payment date will be due 10 days prior to your license/ lease start date.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN MY ROOM RENT?
All the bills, including electricity, internet, utility bills and content insurance.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CHARGES?
No, that’s all you have to pay in regards to your stay with us. However, if you choose to have a television in your room, or you intend to watch live TV on your computer, tablet or smartphone then by law you will be required to purchase a TV licence. Furthermore, we provide laundry facilities on site at an extra cost.
I HAVE PLACED MY BOOKING MORE THAN 7 DAYS AGO, BUT STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY OFFER OF ACCOMMODATION. IS SOMETHING WRONG?
No, everything is okay. In some cases it takes longer for the offers to be sent out as we have to go through a number of procedures before we can send you an offer of accommodation.
LIVING WITH US
HOW DO I CONNECT TO INTERNET?
All of our sites offer a strong Wi-Fi internet connection of up to 100Mbs in speed. The actual speed may vary from site to site and depend on your usage and device.
HOW DO I GET MY POST?
You will be given an access to your personal post box and most of your mail will be delivered there. We advise you check it regularly as we will process important site communication via mail too. Our on-site team will take collections for your larger parcels whenever possible too. Please DO NOT arrange for post (any mail or package) to be delivered to the location before your move-in date as we are unable to store anything that arrives before you do!
CAN I SMOKE IN MY ROOM/STUDIO?
No, smoking is strictly prohibited in all of our locations. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas in all of our locations.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO FIND IN MY ROOM UPON CHECK-IN?
All room and studios are equipped with bed, mattress, desk, chair, wardrobe, book shelves and more. Please click on individual locations on our website to find out complete list of room/ studio facilities at Our Locations
DO I HAVE TO SHARE MY BATHROOM OR KITCHEN?
That depends on whether you stay in an en-suite room (has own bathroom + shared kitchen), non en-suite room (has a shared bathroom + shared kitchen) or a studio (has own bathroom + own kitchen). If you stay in one of our cluster flats you can expect to share with 1-5 other residents depending on your room choice and location.
WHO WILL CLEAN MY ROOM OR CORRIDOR?
You will be responsible for cleaning your own room/ flat for the duration of your stay with us. However, we will ensure that communal areas and facilities are always clean.
SOMETHING IS NOT WORKING OR BROKEN IN MY ROOM/FLAT, WHAT DO I DO?
Contact site reception immediately. Every Mears Student Life has on site maintenance team available to assist whenever necessary. If it is outside of working hours we have a Mears Student Life 24/7 service available to you who will be able to help, dial 0845 601 7781 (This number is only for Out of Hours emergency calls)
